A simple enantiocontrolled synthesis of (R)-2-methyl-2,3-dihydro-4H-[1]benzothiopyran-4-one and (R)-2-methyl-2,3-dihydro-1,5 -benzothiazepin-4(5H)-one starting from ethyl (S)-3-hydroxybutyrate is described.
