The one-pot reaction of dialkyl phosphites or alkyl phenylphosphonites with equimolecular amounts of 1-aryl-2-nitro-l-alkenes in an alcohol in the presence of solid potassium carbonate give the title compounds, i.e., 1-hydroxyindole-3 -phosphonic or -3-phosphinic esters, respectively, in 57-88% yield.
