A synthesis of the naturally occurring cyclohexenetetrol (+)-conduritol F [(+)-1], and its unnatural antipode (-)-1, has been developed in five steps from benzene using Pseudomonas putida oxidation to introduce the necessary cis-1,2-diol functionality.
