Stable anhydrous molecular formaldehyde solutions of controlled concentration (0.5M to 3.0M) in tetrahydrofuran have been prepared as an efficient synthetic reagent for hydroxymethylation. This solution has been demonstrated to be a superior reagent for the addition of one carbon to metalated alkylpyridazines in the first synthesis of 4-(ß-hydroxyethyl)-pyridazine and an improved synthesis of 3-(ß-hydroxyethyl)-pyridazine.
