Procedures for thioalkylation at carbon and at nitrogen are classified into six major types. These are discussed in relation to the principal substrates. In each area the most significant results are considered and commonly used methods of thioalkylation are exemplified. A brief account of some applications of thioalkylation in synthesis is presented. 1. Introduction 2. Terminology 3. Scope 4. Thioalkylation Routes 5. Mechanisms of Thioalkylation 6. Thioalkylation at Carbon 7. Thioalkylation at Nitrogen 8. Applications of Thioalkylation 9. Conclusions
