This article deals with some generalizations that may be reached concerning the preparative halogenation of organic compounds via free-radical chain mechanisms. The halogenating agents discussed are: 1. elemental halogen (chlorine and bromine), 2. certain organic and inorganic halogen compounds which exhibit a special selectivity or which are particularly useful as synthetic tools because of their ease of handling.
