Now a Professor of Neurology, Pathology, Medicine, and Epidemiology, Dr. McArthur has become nationally and internationally recognized for his work in the epidemiology and treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, multiple sclerosis, and other neurological infections and immune-mediated neurological disorders. He has been instrumental in the design and conduct of numerous clinical trials for these disorders. Dr. McArthur is currently the Director of the Department of Neurology at Johns Hopkins, a role in which he has served since 2008, and was the founding director of the Johns Hopkins/National Institute of Mental Health Research Center for Novel Therapeutics of HIV-associated Cognitive Disorders. He has been inducted into the National Academy of Medicine and the Association of American Physicians.

We greatly appreciate the efforts of Drs. Stitt and McArthur, as well as all of the contributing authors, for their wonderful work in this issue of Seminars on the Neurology of Substance Use. We have not previously had an issue dedicated to this important topic, and I am so very proud that Drs. Stitt and McArthur could place a spotlight on this increasingly important issue in Neurology. I am personally grateful for the efforts of Drs. Stitt and McArthur to see this issue through to completion, as underserved populations are disproportionately affected by the neurology of substance use, and we need to make every effort to ensure all people everywhere are able to receive the neurological care and attention that they deserve. We hope you enjoy this marvelous issue!
