Flemming Fuller Royal, pioneer of electrodiagnostics in the United States, dies at the age of 89.

Flemming Fuller Royal was born on 24 March 1934. His unusual first name [he goes by Fuller] was suggested by his sister, Christina, as Flemming was the richest man in Sampson County, North Carolina.

Royal received his bachelor's degree from Wake Forest University in 1956 and his medical degree from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine (Wake Forest University School of Medicine, 1960).

Royal received training in aerospace medicine at Brooks Air Force Base and served as a flight surgeon with the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1964. From 1964 to 1980 he had a general practice in Eugene, Oregon, United States, before co-founding the Nevada Clinic of Preventive Medicine (Las Vegas, Nevada, United States) of which he served as medical director from 1980 until his retirement circa 2020. This clinic specialises in alternative treatments including homeopathy.

Daniel Royal described his father's entry into the alternative medical field:

“...while helping patients lose weight he noticed that many patients were overweight due to food allergies. He began desensitizing them with homeopathic preparations. To learn more about homeopathy, he went to Germany and met with Reinhold Voll, MD. Dr. Royal brought back a Dermatron [electronic diagnostic instrument] from Dr. Voll and used it to test his patients and then prescribe homeopathic remedies. He later computerized the Dermatron, which was the first such electrodermal device of its kind, and became the first clinic in the U.S. to test and treat allergies using homeopathic dilutions'. – Daniel Royal, DO. (email communication, 1 March 2024”.

Royal served on the Nevada Board of Homeopathic Medical Examiners in various capacities: President, 1983 to 1986; 1992 to 2000 and Secretary/Treasurer, 2000 to 2005. He was a faculty member of the British Institute of Homeopathy circa 1991. From 1987 to 1992 he was a member of the Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia Convention of the United States (HPCUS) and worked on the Monograph Review Committee of that organisation.

Dr Royal wrote numerous articles on bioenergetics and resonance homeopathy for various journals, e.g., Journal of the American Institute of Homoeopathy, Journal of Ultramolecular Medicine, American Journal of Acupuncture, and one book, Physician's Electrodiagnostic Handbook (1980; 1983). He also created a 6-month correspondence course devoted to electrodiagnosis and over the years presented many seminars in the bioenergetic field.

Concerning the love of his life, Daniel offered:

“At the beginning of Fuller's second year of medical school, he saw a beautiful first-year nursing student from Clayton, NC, sitting in the cafeteria by a classmate's girlfriend. Fuller asked his classmate for an introduction and then met Marie [Madge Marie, nee Snipes]. Both Fuller and Marie described their first meeting as: “Love at first sight.” Fuller wrote the following about Marie in his personal journal on December 14, 1957, less than five months into their marriage: 'Marie, you have made me very happy in my new married life. I shall always love and adore you as long as I live...”

He and his family were devoted members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He crossed the threshold, at the age of 89, on October 11, 2023. The cause of death was complications from dementia.
