Introduction As a megatrend of our time, digitalization has become an indispensable part of the healthcare sector. In obstetrics, where personal contact between the obstetrician and patient is particularly important, digitalization has a rather difficult status due to its association with impersonal care at distance. Nevertheless, also in obstetrics both professionals and patients can benefit from digitalization.

Methods In order to analyze how digitalization can be successfully implemented in an obstetric clinic and what benefits and risks are associated with it, we carried out a survey with 50 questions among gynecologists and midwives and with 25 questions among pregnant patients in our department.

Results We included the answers of 32 gynecologists, 30 midwives and 40 patients in our analysis.

For both professionals and patients, the main benefits are increased transparency, flexibility and improved patient information. As main risks the professionals report the disruption of the relationship with the patient and the data protection while the patients primarily mention false information from dubious sources. Especially the professionals in the age group>40 years consider additional time expenditure caused by the necessary additional administrative steps in relation to the clinic information system as a relevant problem.

The majority of respondents rate the digitalization in obstetrics highly positively. Among younger professionals<40 years and patients<35 years the use of digital tools and media makes an obstetric clinic more attractive and plays a relevant role in choosing one.

Discussion Understood as a supplement to personal contact, there is a great potential in the use of digital services in obstetrics. Digital obstetrics represents contemporary obstetrics, adapted to the demands and needs of today`s society. For successful implementation, the competence development of the professionals and the communication and inclusion of all groups involved is elementary. In addition, it must be ensured that the digitally performed services are adequately covered by the health insurance companies. In the future, digital services will be a key factor in choosing an obstetric clinic for both professionals and patients.
