You will probably not notice it offhand, but this is the first issue of The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon produced by Mr. Anant Arora. A new era has begun, and we could also have numbered this one “Issue 1 p.S.” (post-Sangeeta). The sad news is that our long-time production manager, Mrs. Sangeeta Gaur, has left Thieme after 10 years. During her time with us, she was a valuable and reliable companion for me who diligently put together issue after issue, editorial after editorial, special after special, supplement after supplement, and thus guaranteed a journal people can trust.

When we first visited the newly opened Thieme office in Noida next to Delhi, India, in 2015, I was still a relative newcomer to the business of actual journal production. Sangeeta took me by the hand and made sure that I understood the intricacies of what I would like to call the Machine Room, also more soberly known as the Production Unit. Here accepted manuscripts in various stages of chaos are neatly assembled (copyedited) and complemented, leading to the eventual layout for typesetting. After final proofreading both by the authors and by the Editor, eFirst publication is organized. The published articles are listed in the respective databases such as PubMed, etc. The journal website must be updated continuously. Eight times a year, a print issue is produced. The major supplements containing the annual meeting abstracts are streamlined and printed in their characteristic flip-over design; additional supplements, usually dealing with guidelines, are produced whenever they happen to come along. For Open Access supporters: this is where a good part of your article processing charges (APCs) goes. Quality will always cost money, and I think it is safe to say that the Noida production unit delivers quality of the highest standard. All this was supervised by Sangeeta so far. Now Anant is at the helm, and his first ordeal was this issue, of all things!

Issue 1 p.S. features our annual highlight, the German Heart Surgery Report. This formidable manuscript, with its wealth of tables and figures and special typesetting requirements, was a beast to start with for Anant. However, he was not discouraged. He took the challenge and overcame it brilliantly with some initial guidance by “the lady.” I take this as proof that The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon continues to be in reliable, strong hands.

Sangeeta, please accept all our best wishes for your future life and career! But remember: You still owe us that picture in front of the Taj Mahal.
