His passion within surgery involves the technical aspects of completing complex operations and having the opportunity to improve or save the lives of his patients. He enjoys teaching medical students and residents, focusing on understanding anatomy and the fundamentals of surgery. He has also published articles in several peer-reviewed journals as well as authoring multiple book chapters and is very active in colorectal societies.

He and his wife Sarah have sons Jack, Drew, and Adam, as well as their German Shepherd, Alice. Outside of medicine, he loves to play and teach his children drums, guitar, and piano. He also enjoys playing golf and hockey as well as coaching his children's sports teams.

On behalf of the readers and staff of Clinics of Colon and Rectal Surgery, I sincerely thank Dr. Schwartzberg for serving as a Guest Editor and for providing us with a superb issue on the surgical aspects of ulcerative colitis and the decisions that go along with it.
