Das Auftreten sekundärer Geschlechtsmerkmale vor dem 8. Geburtstag bei Mädchen und vor dem 9. Geburtstag bei Jungen bedarf immer einer diagnostischen Abklärung. Eine weiterführende Diagnostik bei ausbleibender Pubertätsentwicklung ist ab einem Alter von etwa 13,5 Jahren bei Mädchen und 14,5 Jahren bei Jungen notwendig. Jedem Stehenbleiben der Pubertätsentwicklung von mehr als 1,5 Jahren muss nachgegangen werden. Eine verzögerte Pubertätsentwicklung geht häufig auch mit einer Wachstumsstörung einher. Die häufigste Ursache für eine verspätete Pubertätsentwicklung ist die konstitutionelle Entwicklungsverzögerung. Perzentilen-abweichendes Wachstum bedarf einer Abklärung.
