Liposomal formulations of Alkanna tinctoria root extracts for dermal applications

Their incorporation in liposomes can lead to higher therapeutic efficacy and also minimize side effects. The aim of this work was to encapsulate standardized oily extracts from the roots of Alkanna tinctoria in liposomes for dermal applications. Liposomes were prepared by using Pro-LipoTM Neo (Lucas Mayer Cosmetics), a mixture of already organized phospholipids (pro-liposomes), which can be ordered to liposomes only with water addition. Experimental design (FCC) was employed to evaluate the effect of several parameters (drug/lipid ratio, water phase/lipid phase ratio and A/S concentration in the oily extract) on the mean particle size and encapsulation efficiency (EE) aiming to optimize the liposomal formulation. 32 samples were prepared, fully characterized and evaluated. The optimum formulation showed a mean particle size of 106 nm, z-potential value of -48.1 mV and EE% up to 72%. The in vitro release profiles were satisfactory, and the formulations were stable for a 2 months period.
