Hintergrund

Due to the ageing world population and better treatment of cardiovascular disease cancer is the second leading cause of death globally and will be the leading cause of death in a few decades. Lung cancer is already among the sixth most frequent causes of death worldwide. It is responsible for 24.4% and 15.3% cancer associated deaths in men and woman, respectively. Histological analysis of surgical specimen is the gold standard for cancer classification. Hence, a fast-intraoperative diagnostic tool is important for successful surgical strategy. Especially, intraoperative analysis of resection margins is crucial. Therefore, in this proof of concept study we asked whether this newly developed endoscopic Confocal Laser Microscope (eCLM) CLM device enables to assess non-malignant and malignant resection margins.
