Discription and measurement of septum perforations: the digital way

Septum perforations lead to a significant reduction in the patient's quality of life due to various symptoms such as difficulty to breathe or encrustations and epistaxis. Perforations are surgically repaired or can be temporarily closed with implants (septum button). Such implants are produced either under sedation ( or local anesthesia) or with the help of calculated 3D models from CT scans. We present a new image-based measurement method using a 3D endoscope to derive relevant 3D data for the creation of patient-specific implants. The method is based solely on image information. A digital 3D model of the nasal septum is calculated through the usage modern computer vision algorithms. We achieve competitive measurement results compared to CT data with the advantage of radiation hygiene and cost savings.
