Rheumatic autoimmune diseases as a risk factor for primary ovarian failure

Objective:

The objective of this study was to investigate the relation between premature ovarian failure (POF) and autoimmune diseases (AIDs).

Methods:

From 2009 – 2017 52 consecutive patients with POF, aged 18 – 40 years, were included in this interdisciplinary, prospective study and screened for underlying AIDs by a rheumatologist via medical history, examination and laboratory tests.

Results:

Of all 52 patients with a median age of 31, 40.4% had at least one confirmed AID, including mostly Hashimoto's disease (32.7%), but also systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis (3.8% each), Crohn's disease and celiac disease (1.9% each). AIDs were associated with a poor infertility treatment-outcome, due to multifactorial reasons.

Conclusion:

We found a high prevalence of AIDs in patients with POF. Screening for AID should therefore be offered to every POF patient.
