Objective: To clarify the safety and efficacy of surgical management of small petroclival meningiomas, which is under discussion in patients with mild or none clinical presentation.
Methods: This is a retrospective study of surgically managed patients with small (<3 cm diameter) petroclival meningiomas in the Department of Neurosurgery, Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, Kaunas Clinics in the period of 1991 - 2015. All clinical data (including following visits) available were collected. All patients were operated using retrosigmoid approach. Results: Thirty four patients with small petroclival meningiomas were treated in our department in 15 years period. Total removal (Simpson grade II) was achieved in 97% of cases. Postoperative morbidity was satisfyingly low, two cases (5.8%). Recurrence was noticed in 2 cases (5.8%) in medium follow-up of 60 months.
Conclusion: This study represents that surgery of small petroclival meningiomas in patients with mild or none of the symptoms is practical according to safety and efficacy.
