Can basal temperature chart detect early threatened abortion

Background: Basal temperature chart are used to test for ovulation pattern, luteal phase defect and predict ectopic pregnancy although not as predictive.

Materials and methods: In this retrospective study, we analyze the effect of a sudden drop in basal temperature in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy and spotting on abortion, fetal morbidity and mortality and length of pregnancy at Lagos University Teaching Hospital and Prenatal Diagnosis and Therapy Centre.

Results: Between 1986 and 2013, a total n = 69 charts were screened and information from their case notes extracted. 7 were twins; I was triplet and the rest singleton pregnancies. Out of the 7 twins, 3 had missing twin syndrome. 3 had pregnancies more than 32 weeks. 1 less than 32 weeks. The only triplet was missing triplet. Out of the 61 singleton pregnancies 12 had spontaneous abortion, 40 deliveries more than 32 weeks and rest than 32 weeks.

Conclusion: Basal Temperature drop and spotting in the first trimester signifies problem in early pregnancy.
