Prevalence of gestational diabetes using 50 gram glucose challenge test 1 hour result in 1204 cases in Lagos
Objective: To determine the prevalence of gestational diabetes using 50 g glucose challenge test first hour value.
Settings: A Prenatal Diagnosis and Therapy Centre and Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of a tertiary University Teaching Hospital in Lagos.
Method and material: Between 15th of may 2002 and 22nd may 2014, a total of n = 1204 pregnant women attending the antenatal clinic of the department of obstetrics and gynecology, college of medicine, of Lagos, Lagos Nigeria were screened during pregnancy using 50 gram glucose challenge test. Patient with fasting one hour result ≥140 mg/dl were considered to have gestational diabetes. The blood glucose level were determined using glucose oxidase method according to the manufacturer instructions.
Result:

278 patients (23.2%) had values ≥140 mg/dl. 38 patients (3.2%) had values between 135 – 139 mg/dl.28 patients (12.3%) had values between 130 – 134 mg/dl and 52 patients 4.9% had values between 125 – 129 mg/dl

175 patients (62.9%) were in ages between 31 and 40 years.80 patients (28.8%) were in ages between 20 and 30 years.14 patients (5.1%) were in ages between 41 and 50 years and in 9 patient (3.2%) without ages.
Conclusion: Ours results shows that 50 g glucose challenge test one hour results detected 278 patient (23.2%) using ≥140 grams/dl as cut off. That means that every one in four has the risk of gestational diabetes in our population.
