Screening for gestational diabetic using fasting blood test. Analysis of the first 1204 cases as in Lagos

Summary: Between 15th of May 2002 and 22nd of May 2014, a total of n = 1204 pregnant women were screened using fasting blood sugar level of 95 mg/dl. An analysis of the first 1204 cases in Lagos.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of gestational diabetics using fasting blood value of 95 mg/dl.

Settings: A Prenatal Diagnosis and Therapy Centre and Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Tertiary Hospital in Lagos, Nigeria.

Methods and materials: Between 15th of May 2002 and 2014 a total of n = 1204 pregnant women attending the antenatal clinic of the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, College of Medicine of university of Lagos, Lagos Nigeria were screened during pregnancy using 50 gramm glucose challenge text. Their fasting blood glucose levels were used. Patients with fasting glucose levels results of 95 mg/dl were considered to have gestational diabetes. For analysis of blood glucose oxidase method was used recording to the manufacturer's instructions (Randox Laboratories Ltd, Crumlin, Co. Antrim-UK).

Results: 192 Patients (16%) had values of fasting blood sugar of ≥95 mg/dl. 125 Patients (65.1%) were of ages between 31 and 40 years, 51 patients (26.6%) between ages of 20 to 30 years old. 9 patients (4.7%) were in age group of 41 – 50 years and 7 of unknown ages.

Conclusion: Our results show that using 95 mg/dl as cut off, 192 Patients (16%) have gestational diabetes. That means everyone in every 7 has the risk of gestational diabetes in our population.
