Klinische Studien haben gezeigt, dass die zytoreduktive Nephrektomie beim metastasierenden Nierenzellkarzinom als Ergänzung einer zielgerichteten Therapie die Lebensdauer von Patienten verlängern kann. Eine internationale retrospektive Studie ging nun der Frage nach, ob die zytoreduktive Nephrektomie immer Teil des empfohlenen Behandlungsprotokolls sein sollte. Laut Heng et al. ist das Krankheitsstadium von entscheidender Bedeutung.
