Abstract
Extracorporeal liver support systems aim to prevent deterioration of liver failure by reducing endogenous liver toxins accumulating in liver dysfunction. Currently, four artificial liver support devices are available in clinical routine: the Molecular Adsorbent Recirculating System (MARS), Single Pass Albumin Dialysis (SPAD), OPen ALbumin Dialysis (OPAL) and the Prometheus System. All systems were shown to alter water soluble and protein bound substances accumulating in liver failure, but most clinical experience was gained with MARS. Despite improvement in clinical condition none of the aforementioned devices were shown to improve patient survival. Thus, more clinical studies addressing timing, dosing and clear (contra-)indications are needed.
