Stenosis of the Internal Auditory Meatus: Case Report
Introduction: Stenosis of the internal auditory meatus (IAM) is defined as equal or greater loss than 3-mm diameter vertica the same or even as a meatus dimensions with less than 2 mm. The most common clinical manifestation is hypoacusis, may submit tinnitus, and dizziness is associated. Audiometry is frequently a sensorineural hearing loss but the diagnosis is only confirmed for examination of image (CT and resonance) showing IAM-reduced caliber. Therapy used in most cases is cochlear implant or individuals sound amplification device (ISAD), aimed at the restoration of hearing functions of patients.
Objectives: The study aims to report a case of internal auditory canal stenosis.
Case Report: A 22-year-old female patient (F.J.N) sought otorhinolaryngologic assistance complaining about hypoacusis, many years old associated with low academic results and inattention. Audiogram showed mixed hearing loss in the right and imaging exam confirmed reduced diameter of the IAM.
Conclusion: The stenosis of IAM shall to a constriction caused bone growth by defective, resulting in an abnormal IAM. Audiometry may show a sensorineural hearing loss and diagnosis is made by CT scan or MRI. Otorhinolaryngologist should always use complementary tests so as to image exam of research in case of hearing loss when judged necessary, aiming to confirm the etiological diagnosis more need such as in the malformation.
