Her2-neu score 0 predicts poor survival in patients with triple-negative breast cancer
Purpose: Many patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) have a poor outcome, but not all of them. Now the question arises why patients with TNBC have so different individual courses of disease. The present study was perfomed in order to distinguish the survival from patients with HER2neu Score 0 and HER2neu Score 1 and 2 with negative FISH.
Experimental Design: Retrospectively, we studied a cohort of 133 patients with TNBC, diagnosed at the Saarland University Medical Center between December 2004 and June 2013. We compared the disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) in those women on the basis of the different Her2-neu scores (0 versus 1 or 2 with negative FISH).
Results: A total of 133 patients was included with a mean age of 55.7 years. Of the 133 triple-negative patients, 131 patients had a numeral determination of the Her2-neu score. 54.14% of those patients had a Her2-neu score 0 and 45.86% had a score 1 or 2. This retrospective study shows that patients with a Her2-neu score 0 had a significantly poorer outcome regarding DFS and OS compared to patients with a Her2-neu score 1 or 2 (Figure).
Conclusion: The Her2-neu score is able to function as a prognostic factor in patients with triple-negative breast cancer. Her2-neu score 0 predicts a worse DFS and OS. However, prospective data is needed to confirm this issue.
