Unusual cytotoxic sesquiterpene xylosides isolated from Nidorella sp.
As part of our project in discovering bioactive natural products from plants, we identified two weakly cytotoxic compounds from Nidorella resedifolia (Asteraceae). Bioassay guided fractionation of the crude methanol extract led to isolation of two unusual sesquiterpene xylosides (1-2). The structures of 1 and 2 were elucidated as known compounds. They were previously isolated and identified from Nidorella hottentotica (Asteraceae) in 1981. However, their biological activities were not reported and only proton NMR data were available. Compounds 1 and 2 displayed moderate cytotoxic activities (10.6 and 11.8µM respectively) against the A2780 ovarian cancer cell line. We also provide the 13C-NMR and HMBC data of compound 1.
