Dass frühkindliche Traumatisierungen die Vulnerabilität für chronische Schmerzen erhöhen, wurde bereits 1959 von dem amerikanischen Internisten und Psychoanalytiker G. L. Engel auf der Basis sorgfältiger klinischer Beobachtungen beschrieben. Als es ab Mitte der 1970er-Jahre zunehmend um die Objektivierung psychosomatischer Zusammenhänge ging und vonseiten der Psychologie behaviorale Ansätze das Verständnis und die Behandlung chronischer Schmerzzustände zu dominieren begannen, wurden solche biografischen Zusammenhänge als spekulativ abgetan – und werden es teilweise bis heute noch.
