Einleitung
Umfangreiche Evidenz aus Langzeitstudien belegt, dass durch adäquate parodontale Therapie Zähne auch bei fortgeschrittener Parodontitis langfristig erfolgreich erhalten werden können. Ein wesentlicher Faktor für die parodontale Stabilität ist dabei eine strukturierte und konsequent umgesetzte unterstützende Parodontitistherapie (UPT, oder auch Erhaltungstherapie genannt). In diesem Beitrag werden die Inhalte und der Ablauf einer adäquaten UPT erläutert. Außerdem wird eine Falldokumentation der Behandlung einer generalisierten schweren chronischen Parodontitis und deren Verlauf über fast 20 Jahre in einem stringenten UPT-System dargestellt.
