Erste Versuche, neoplastische Zellen in verschiedenen Körperflüssigkeiten nachzuweisen, reichen bis in die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts zurück. So wurde 1860 über das Vorkommen von Krebszellen im Sputum eines Pharynxkarzinom-Patienten berichtet [1].
