I want to thank Drs. Salgado and Monstrey for serving as guest editors and the exceptional group of knowledgeable and experienced authors that they have brought together to write on “Aesthetic and Functional Genital and Perineal Surgery: Male and Female.”

Dr. Salgado is a board-certified plastic surgeon who received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. in 1995 and stayed on at Georgetown for his general surgery training. He completed his plastic surgery residency at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York in 2000.

While in the military, Dr. Salgado served as Chief of Plastic Surgery at Darnall U.S. Army Medical Center at Fort Hood, Texas and Assistant Chief of Plastic Surgery at William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Fort Bliss, Texas. Subsequently, he went on for additional training in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Chang-Gung Memorial Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan and at E-Da Hospital / I-Shou University in Taiwan as a Reconstructive Microsurgery Scholar. Dr. Salgado has held academic appointments in plastic surgery at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey and at University Hospitals Cleveland/Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. In June 2010, Dr. Salgado joined the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in the Division of Plastic Surgery as an Associate Professor where he has established a successful academic practice. His clinical practice is focused on postoncologic reconstruction, limb salvage, and complex wounds.

Dr. Salgado is an active researcher who has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and many book chapters to his credit. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery and is a reviewer for several other journals.

Dr. Monstrey is a Professor at the University of Ghent, and plastic surgeon in the Department of Plastic Surgery at Ghent University Hospital. He obtained his medical degree from State University of Ghent in Belgium in 1980 and completed his general surgery residency in 1984 at the University Hospital in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. His plastic surgery residency was completed at the University Hospital Ghent in 1988. In addition, he completed his doctoral dissertation on trauma to the urinary system at the University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands in 1988. Dr. Monstrey worked as a research fellow with Dr. J.W. Futrell and Dr. S.S. Ramasastry from 1989–1990 in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh and continued the following year as a clinical fellow in microsurgery and hand surgery with Dr. Futrell and Dr. N.F. Jones.

Dr. Monstrey is well known among his peers as an academic plastic surgeon, having contributed 178 peer-reviewed articles, 7 books, and 4 chapters to the discipline's literature. He is an initiator of many funded research projects and has gone on several international humanitarian missions.
