Summary
The plant extract Cystus052 blocks influenza viruses
Infections with Influenza A viruses are still a serious burden for mankind. Although the recent influenza pandemic in 2009 took a rather mild course, the relatively long time period since a vaccine was available highlighted the fact, that vaccination is not an option for the early phase of a pandemic outbreak. In addition, the increasing incidence of resistance to the currently licensed influenza drugs indicates the urgent need for novel antiviral agents against influenza. Antiviral acting plant products from traditional medicine could be a promising alternative for prevention and therapy of influenza. This article highlights findings regarding the plant extract Cystus052 from the Mediterranean plant pink rockrose. This extract has been shown to be an efficient antiviral against influenza viruses in cell culture and animals. It acts via a novel mechanism, namely non-pharmacological interaction with the virus particle to prevent entry into host cells.
