Summary

Two randomized controlled trials (RCTs) suggest that functional scores tended to be better for volar locked plating compared with bridging external fixation. Varying results were seen for grip strength and radiographic measurements, differences in range of motion tended to diminish over time, and no differences were seen in complication rates. Additional studies with stronger methods and adequate power should be performed to substantiate these findings and provide more definitive evidence regarding differences between volar plating and bridging external fixation in treating distal radial fractures.
