Die erhöhte Konzentration von Matrix-Metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) im Sulkusfluid weist die Aktivität einer gingivalen und/oder parodontalen Entzündung nach und stellt damit einen aktiven, behandlungsbedürftigen Zustand dar. Aktive MMP-8 ist ein objektiver, valider und wissenschaftlich anerkannter Marker zur Erkennung einer Parodontalerkrankung, wie z.B. der Gingivitis und der chronischen Parodontitis, oder periimplantären entzündlichen Erkrankungen.
