Abstract

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) devices that have been developed for the maxillofacial region have spread in orthodontics in the last years. They provide real 3D-imaging at a reduced radiation dose and lower cost compared to conventional CT. This paper highlights some important aspects of CBCT and its use in orthodontics. Image quality, x-ray doses and orthodontic indications are going to be outlined. 3D-volume rendering, incidental findings and segmentation of orthodontic models from CBCT are also going to be discussed.
