Significance

A high-yielding procedure for the formation of annulated porphyrins with far-red absorptions is reported from a known dione starting material. The nitrogens introduced on the exterior edge of the porphyrin structure are available for additional functionalization or metal coordination, and N-oxide derivatives are produced.
