Significance

Reported is a one-pot synthesis of hitherto unknown polyheterocyclic annulated ­hydroquinoline systems via tandem C-alkylation and intramolecular O-alkylation of 4-hydroxycoumarin or 4-hydroxypyran-2-one via quinolinium salts. The method is useful and attractive, starting from commercially available and/or easily prepared starting materials affording complex alkaloid-like structures in high yields. The substrate scope was modestly studied.
