Posterior Approach for Sacrococcygeal Posterior Meningocele with Anterior Large Mature Cystic Teratoma

Introduction

Sacrococcygeal teratoma is one of the most common tumors occurring in newborns and is sometimes associated with abnormalities of the nervous, cardiac, urogenital or musculoskeletal system [2] [7]. However, an association of teratoma and neural tube defects is very rare [3] [4]. Here we present a neonatal case of teratoma which extended anteriorly to the abdominopelvic organs. The teratoma was accompanied by a posterior meningocele in the sacrococcygeal region. On radiological investigation the teratoma appeared to be an anterior meningocele. This type of association has not been reported previously. In addition, we describe our surgical techniques using only a posterior approach.
