In vitro evaluation of antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-tyrosinase activities of Zanthoxylum planispinum
The methanolic extracts of Zanthoxylum planispinum leaves from south Korea were screened for their antioxidant properties, tyrosinase inhibition and antibacterial activities to apply as a functional ingredient for cosmetic products. The level of total phenolics and flavonoids of the leaves extracts were determined by UV/VIS spectroscopy. The extract of Zanthoxylum planispinum leaves had good phenolic (391mg/g) and flavonoid (187mg/g) contents and showed strongest activity of antioxidant-related enzymes including SOD, CAT, and APX. IC50 value of the extracts against mushroom tyrosinase was 5.3µg/ml which is about 5 times more effective than arbutin and kojic acid. RS50 value of the DPPH free radical scavenging activity of the extracts was 2.7µg/ml which is about 3 times more effect than BHT and α-tocoperol. The extracts also showed the best antimicrobial activity from gram-negative bacteria to gram-positive bacteria with MID value as low as 20µg/disc.
