Antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities of terpenoids isolated from Salvia multicaulis Vahl
Salvia multicaulis is a perennial shrub belonging to family Lamiaceae [1]. Candesalvone A, candesalvone B, with two triterpenes have been isolated from the aerial parts, the structure was elucidated by means of spectral data [2].
The isolated compounds were tested for their antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities [3,4]. Almost all the compounds (at 25–40µg/ml) provoked significant hepatoprotection (95%), comparable to silymarin (98%). The diterpenoids (A, B) exhibited strong antioxidant activity (92%), compared to Trolox (97%), while the triterpenoid compounds showed only negligible activity (70%).
