Summary
Acute renal failure after oral cholecystography is a rare complication. The mechanism is unknown. The uricosuric action of oral cholecystographic agents cannot be excluded as a contributing factor. Dehydratation of the patient should be avoided in oral cholecystography to diminish the risk of nephrotoxicity. As compared with other oral cholecystographic agents Bilopaque (Sodium tyropanoate) has a smaller uricosuric effect and it should therefore predispose to less nephrotoxicity if due to this action.
