Significance

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) merit interest in that they have low manufacturing costs and potentials as high-performance photovoltaic devices. Although ruthenium-based sensitizers have been widely used for this application, the rarity of the precious metal calls for development of metal-free sensitizers. The authors report various thienothiophene-based organic sensitizers for DSSC applications and have demonstrated that they show up to 9.1% power conversion efficiency under standard global solar conditions.
