Significance

Dendrimer-supported osmium catalyst 2 was prepared by the reaction of N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine with poly(benzyl ether) dendric bromide G3-Br, followed by treatment with potassium osmate (eq.1). The catalyst 2 promoted the dihydroxylation of olefins 3 to give the corresponding diol 4 in 86-94% yield (9 examples).
