Significance

A thermally stable (up to 480 ˚C) silica-based cobalt catalyst 1 for the selective deprotection of aryl acetates was developed. Optimal reaction conditions (substrate: 1 mmol) using the novel mesoporous-supported cobalt(II) (0.01 mmol) in MeOH (5 ml) at r.t. were identified (98% yield; 2). A control experiment was examined without the immobilized Co(II) catalyst 1 to demonstrate its high catalytic activity (with 1, 2: 98%; without 1, 2: 7% yield).
