Significance

A supported copper hydroxide on titanium oxide [Cu(OH)X/TiO2] was prepared by mixing copper chloride dihydrate and titanium dioxide in aqueous alkaline (pH = 12). Cu(OH)X/TiO2 catalyzed the oxidative homocoupling of terminal alkynes 1 to give the corresponding 1,3-diynes 2 in 80-99% yield (15 examples). The Cu(OH)X/TiO2 support was recovered by filtration and reused without loss of catalytic activity for the formation of 2a (2nd use: 82% yield).
