Significance

Valerenic acid was extracted from the roots of Valeriana officinalis. It is a selective modulator of GABAA receptor subtypes and therefore a potential drug against various central nervous system dysfunctions. The focal step of this short and high-yielding synthesis is an intramolecular, metal-coordinated Diels-Alder reaction (B → D).
