Significance

Reported here is an efficient and practical method for synthesizing chiral heteroaromatic alcohols. Asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of the corresponding ketones in isopropanol is achieved, using a chiral diaminodiphosphine-ruthenium(II) complex 2 as the catalyst. Good yields and enantioselectivities can be obtained in a variety of products. The conditions are non-hazardous and mild causing no reduction of the heterocycle.
