Significance

A new method for the asymmetric synthesis of tetrahydroquinolin-3-ols is described. The procedure involves a cobalt-catalyzed, one-pot reductive cyclization of nitro cyclic sulfites in the presence of sodium borohydride. The resulting 3-substituted tetrahydroquinoline derivatives are obtained in high yield and enantioselectivity.
