Significance

The authors describe the first synthesis of a hexabenzocorone (HBC) functionalized with conjugated oligomeric substituents. The addition of 2-trimethylsilyl-9,9′-dialkylfluorenes to the HBC core and subsequent conversion into the iodofluorene provided a functional group handle for cross-coupling. The addition of oligomeric substituents was accomplished using a Buchwald-Hartwig coupling.
