BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY OF PHYTOESTROGENS
III. Experimental studies on some biological properties of β–sitosterolPublication History
Publication Date:
15 January 2009 (online)
Summary
The biological study of β–sitosterol gave rise to the following facts:
The rhythmic contractions of pregnant and non–pregnant uteri and intestine in mature mice were inhibited by β–sitosterol treatment. The phytoestrogen decreased the oxytocic effect of pituitrin on pregnant uterus.
β–sitosterol infusion decreased the arterial blood pressure in the anaesthetized dogs, while the respiratory rate remained constant.
The excised frog hearts did not show any response to β–sitosterol perfusion in both rate and amplitude of contraction.
