Summary

A histochemical investigation has been made on the tubular florets of different types of Matricaria chamomilla grown in Egypt. The oil glands containing prochamazulene in the floret were located by exposing them to bromine vapours. The stained blue glands were counted under a magnified field and the relation of their number to the intensity of the blue colour of the oil was studied. The obtained value was provisionally called prochamazulene value. The method helped in the selection of strains of breeded chamomile which contain blue oil.
