DATURA LEICHHARDTII MUELL. EX BENTH.
IV. Morphological and Anatomical Studies on the Cross D. leichhardtii D. innoxiaPublication History
Publication Date:
15 January 2009 (online)
Summary
Some morphological and microscopical characters of the Fi hybrid and F2 selfs of the cross D. leichhardtii × D. innoxia, together with progeny resulting from backcrossing the Fi to D. innoxia have been recorded and compared with D. leichhardtii and D. innoxia.
In a number of morphological characteristics (pigmentation, hairiness, flower form, rate of development of the seedling plant) and in some microscopical characteristics (clothing trichome length and breadth, trichome number, size of calcium oxalate clusters) the F1 hybrid is intermediate between those of the parents. The F1 plants produce substantially more foliage per plant than either parent. Leaf shape most closely resembles the D. leichhardtii parent and size of leaves and floral members together with opening characteristics of the corolla and diameter of pollen grains resemble those of D. innoxia.
That the majority of these characters are not simply inherited is shown by the characters of the F2 generation, either produced by selfing or by backcrossing of the F1 with D. innoxia (male parent).
